Surface Finishing
Black oxide converts the surface of ferrous metals into magnetite, giving a uniform matte or semi-gloss black. It is usually sealed with oil or wax, which provides mild corrosion resistance.
Specification
| Attribute | Typical behavior | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | ~1 µm or less | Little to no dimensional change |
| Appearance | Matte to semi-gloss black | Depends on surface prep |
| Corrosion | Mild, mainly from the oil or wax sealant | Not for outdoor exposure alone |
| Common spec | MIL-DTL-13924 | Class depends on substrate |
Typical industry ranges for reference. Final thickness, color, and specification are confirmed on your quote and drawing.
Design Tips
Usually no masking needed because thickness is negligible.
Useful for optical and tooling components.
Carbon and alloy steels; separate processes exist for stainless steel.
Sealant can transfer; note if parts must be oil-free.
