Carbon Steel

Low-Carbon Steel 1018 (cold drawn)

1018 is a low-carbon (about 0.15–0.20% C) mild steel with good machinability, weldability, and uniform properties. It is a cost-effective choice for general structural and machined parts, and it can be case hardened by carburizing. Request a quote or browse all materials.

Advantages

Why engineers choose Steel 1018

Cost

Low material cost and wide availability.

Weldability

Excellent weldability with common processes.

Machinability

Machines predictably with a good surface finish.

Case hardening

Carburizing produces a hard wear surface over a tough core.

Design considerations: Rusts without a protective finish; lower strength than medium-carbon or alloy steels such as 1045 or 4140; not through-hardenable.
