Surface Finishing

Electropolishing

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process that removes a thin layer of metal, preferentially from microscopic peaks. The result is a smoother, brighter, cleaner surface with improved corrosion resistance, mainly used on stainless steel.

Typical options

AttributeTypical behaviorNotes
Material removal~2.5–25 µm (0.0001–0.001 in)Controlled by time and current
SurfaceBright, smooth, micro-deburredReduces Ra; final value depends on starting surface

Design Tips

What to specify on your drawing

Dimensional allowance

Plan for uniform material removal on critical dimensions.

Starting finish

Electropolishing smooths but does not remove deep scratches or tool marks.

Deburring

Removes micro-burrs, useful for small and internal features.

Cleanliness

Common for food, pharma, and vacuum hardware.

Add a Finish

Include finish requirements with your RFQ.

Note the finish, specification, color, thickness, and masked areas on your drawing so the quote reflects them.
