Passivation for Stainless Steel

Passivation is a chemical treatment, usually nitric or citric acid, that removes free iron and contaminants from stainless steel surfaces so the chromium-rich passive layer can form uniformly. It does not change the appearance noticeably.

Design Tips

What to specify on your drawing

When to use

After machining or fabrication of stainless parts, especially for corrosive, medical-adjacent, or food environments.

Not a coating

It enhances the alloy’s own corrosion resistance; it does not add a layer.

Verification

Specify any required tests (e.g. humidity or water immersion) in the RFQ.

Free-machining grades

303 and similar grades need care; note the grade.

Compatible Materials

Add a Finish

Include finish requirements with your RFQ.

Note the finish, specification, color, thickness, and masked areas on your drawing so the quote reflects them.
