Surface Finishing

Plating, Chem Film, Passivation, and Black Oxide

Plating deposits a thin metallic layer to add corrosion resistance, wear resistance, conductivity, or appearance. Conversion coatings chemically change the surface instead of adding a metal layer and are often used as a paint base or for conductivity.

Design Tips

What to specify on your drawing

Thickness on drawings

Specify plating thickness and whether dimensions apply before or after plating.

Hydrogen embrittlement

High-strength steels may need post-plate baking; call out the requirement.

Masking

Identify surfaces that must stay bare for fit, grounding, or welding.

Certificates

If you need plating certificates or test reports, include that in the RFQ.

Add a Finish

Include finish requirements with your RFQ.

Note the finish, specification, color, thickness, and masked areas on your drawing so the quote reflects them.
