Engineering Thermoplastic

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic with good impact toughness, dimensional stability, and low cost. It is one of the most common materials for housings and consumer products, and it is available as machinable stock, injection molding resin, and 3D printing filament. Typical Properties

ABS at a glance

PropertyTypical value
Density1.04–1.06 g/cm³
Tensile strength~40–45 MPa
Flexural modulus~2.0–2.5 GPa
Elongation at break~10–30%
Notched Izod impact~200 J/m (grade dependent)
Heat deflection (1.8 MPa)~90–100 °C
Glass transition~105 °C
FlammabilityHB typical; V-0 grades available

Typical general-purpose grade values; flame-retardant, glass-filled, and plating grades differ. These are typical reference values from standard published data, not guaranteed minimums. Request material certificates in your RFQ if properties must be verified.

Advantages

Why engineers choose ABS

Toughness

Good impact resistance at room temperature.

Cost

Low material and processing cost.

Finishing

Paints, glues, and plates well; vapor smoothing possible for printed parts.

Process range

Machined, molded, cast-like, or printed.

Design considerations: Poor UV resistance outdoors without coating (ASA is an alternative); limited chemical resistance to solvents; modest heat resistance.
